Why do cats like to claw carpets?
Cats claw carpets for a few totally natural reasons — it's instinctual behaviour, not them being a wee menace (even if it feels that way sometimes).

Here’s why they do it:

Sharpening claws: Scratching helps cats shed the outer sheath of their claws to keep them sharp and healthy.
Marking territory: Cats have scent glands in their paws, so when they scratch, they're leaving both a visual and scent marker to say, 'this is mine'.
Stretching and exercise: Clawing is part of a full-body stretch that feels really good to them. It's like yoga and exfoliation for their paws.
Boredom or stress: If a cat doesn't have enough stimulation or is feeling anxious, scratching the carpet might be a way to cope.
If it’s becoming an issue, you can redirect the behaviour with:

Scratching posts or pads (especially cardboard — some cats are picky about texture)

Catnip or treats to attract them to the right spot

Double-sided tape or deterrent sprays on carpet areas they target

Regular playtime to tire them out
